The US military has released an unprecedented report on UFO sightings that have remained unexplained. The report is significant because it is one of the most detailed accounts of unexplained UFO sightings ever released by the US government. The report comes after three UFO videos were released by the New York Times in 2017. The three videos were taken by the US military and appeared to show objects flying in impossible directions and at impossible speeds. The New York Times report reignited interest in UFOs and potential contact with aliens. The Pentagon later confirmed the videos were taken by the Navy and the resulting interest led to the 2021 report.

The videos and the report have renewed a longstanding fascination that many people have with UFOs and aliens. There is a long history of UFO sightings in the US that have been widely reported and made famous. These reports have typically been met with a mixture of enthusiasm and scepticism from different crowds of people. One of the most famous UFO events is the Roswell incident, which kickstarted mainstream interest in aliens and UFOs in the US. In 1947, an object crash-landed in Roswell, New Mexico. An initial press release from Roswell Army Air Field said that a “flying disc” had been recovered from the crash site. This naturally led to a rush of speculation and media interest in what the “flying disc” was and whether or not it was an alien spacecraft. The Army quickly withdrew the previous press release and said that the crashed object was actually a weather balloon. The conflicting information fuelled decades of conspiracy theories about what crashed in Roswell. Although the crashed object being an alien spacecraft has been debunked countless times, this hasn’t lessened interest. Roswell, New Mexico regularly receives tourists who are interested in UFOs. The city has since embraced the fame that they have received, even having streetlights in the shape of aliens and a UFO museum.

Although many UFO sightings have been explained in various ways, the report from the US government has gained worldwide media attention because the reported sightings remain unexplained. The report states that the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force could not find explanations for 143 UFO sightings. The UAPTF is part of US Navy intelligence and is tasked with studying UFO sightings and finding explanations for them. The UAPTF said that the 143 unexplained sightings “probably lack a single explanation” and named five categories that they could fall into. The categories include objects in the air such as birds and drones, classified technology, technology developed by other nations such as Russia and China, atmospheric phenomena such as ice in the air that confuses systems and an “other” category which includes everything else. The “other” category is the one that ufologists have been focusing on. Some of the unidentified objects were described as moving in ways that defy any technology currently available to any country in the world. These objects are what ufologists have been researching themselves to try and find proof of alien life.

Although the UAPTF says there is no indication of the unexplained sightings being extraterrestrial, officials say they will “go wherever the data takes us”. Meaning, they are open to the idea of investigating extraterrestrial origins if the data points them in that direction. In the meantime, many are looking for answers as to what the UFOs in the report are. The US government wants to ensure that the sightings are understood from a position of security. If technology does exist that currently seems impossible, the US military wants to know what it is. Meanwhile, amateur sleuths and ufologists are using the new report and previously released videos to try and connect the dots to what they believe are alien spacecraft. Whatever the unexplained sightings are, passion for UFOs has been reignited.
