The U.S. government has killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. They killed him on January 3, 2020, in Baghdad, Iraq. Gen Soleimani was the leader of the Iranian Quds Force, Iran’s international military. He had a close relationship with the Supreme Leader of Iran and was often thought of as the second most powerful man in the country.

President Donald Trump gave the order to assassinate the general. President Obama and President George W. Bush both decided not to kill the general during their presidencies. They thought it was too risky.

Recently, the U.S. and Iran have had an increasingly bad relationship. There have been several attacks on U.S. bases in Iraq. This includes a rocket attack where a U.S. worker died. The U.S. believes Iran was responsible for these attacks. Donald Trump said the general was planning more attacks soon. However, others have said there is little evidence of the planned attacks.

The Supreme Leader of Iran says they will get revenge for the general’s death. Iran and other countries are very angry that the general has been killed. Iraq is in a difficult position as it is allied with both Iran and the U.S. Although, Iraq has stated that the attack was a violation of their agreement with the U.S.

Many people believe the general’s death could result in war. Iraq has now banned all U.S. soldiers from the country. There are currently about 5,000 military workers in Iraq.
