The wife of an American diplomat killed a British man with her car. She was driving on the wrong side of the road in the UK. In America, people drive on the right side of the road and in the UK, people drive on the left. She was mistakenly driving on the wrong side of the road as if she was driving in America. While on the wrong side, she drove into a young man on a bike. The man was on the correct side of the road but he was still killed by the woman’s mistake.

The woman was questioned by the police but she could not be arrested because she has diplomatic immunity. The family and workers of diplomats all have immunity when they are in their host country. This means she cannot be punished for any crime she commits while in the host country. Normally, this is not a big problem because only small crimes, like speeding or parking tickets, are committed. She told the police she would stay in the UK and help with their investigation. However, she lied to the police and left the UK. She escaped back to America so she could be more protected.

Many people in the UK are very angry. They want justice for the young man who was killed. They have asked the UK government and Prime-Minister Boris Johnson to help. The UK government and Boris Johnson asked the US government to send her back to the UK and to cancel her diplomatic immunity so she can be punished. A country can decide to cancel the immunity of its diplomat. President Trump said he would not send her back or cancel her diplomatic immunity. The US wants to protect the diplomat and his wife from punishment although they haven’t given a reason why. The family of the young man are still trying to get the woman sent back to the UK.
