On July 20, 1969, people landed on the Moon for the first time. Now, people are celebrating the achievement for the 50th anniversary. Many people think the Moon landing is one of the greatest things humanity has ever done. It is one of the most significant events in all of human history.

The first mission to go to the Moon was called Apollo 11. The first man to walk on the Moon was Neil Armstrong and the second was Buzz Aldrin. Michael Collins was the third man on the Apollo 11 mission but he didn’t land on the Moon with them. He had to stay in the rocket orbiting the Moon. This is because he was the pilot for the Apollo 11 mission. Collins had to make sure that Armstrong and Aldrin could return to Earth. Nobody knew if the mission would be successful. President Nixon even had a speech ready for if the astronauts died or couldn’t return to Earth.

Only 13 people have stepped foot on the Moon and only 6 Apollo missions successfully landed on the Moon with astronauts. Apollo 13 was supposed to land on the Moon but an explosion on the way caused the mission to be aborted. Nobody has been to the Moon since 1972 but there has been a lot of interest in going to the Moon again because of the anniversary. Some people think that building a base on the Moon is the best way to go to Mars in the future. NASA is planning a mission to the Moon for 2024 but it is uncertain whether it will go ahead.
