PETA is an animal charity. PETA stands for “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals”.  They try to protect animals. There are 6.5 million members of PETA. However, many people disagree with some things they do.

This includes a tweet from PETA. The tweet was about Steve Irwin. They wrote it on his birthday. He would have been 57.  Steve Irwin was an Australian zookeeper and animal protector. He helped many animals by moving them out of danger. He also made many documentaries to teach people about animals. He died in 2006 while making a documentary. It was about ocean animals. A stingray killed him by accident. Stingrays are not dangerous animals. Steve Irwin was the second person to be killed by a stingray in Australia. The stingray thought Steve Irwin was a shark and got scared.

PETA decided to criticise Steve Irwin because Google celebrated his birthday on February 22. They said he was mean to animals and should not be celebrated. Many people became angry at PETA. This is because Steve Irwin always helped animals and protected them. He also taught people about animals that look dangerous. This helped to save the animals too. Now, people don’t kill as many dangerous animals in Australia. If someone sees a snake or crocodile, they ask for help to move it. Before Steve Irwin, they would have killed the animal.
