In January 2019, a picture of an egg was posted on Instagram. The picture had the caption “Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram. Beating the current world record held by Kylie Jenner (18 million)! We got this “. It appeared to be a simple attempt to become the most popular picture on Instagram.

The campaign succeeded and the picture received more than 52 million likes after going viral across websites like Reddit, Facebook and Instagram. It became the most liked picture on Instagram within 10 days of being posted. Many celebrities shared the picture and millions of people followed the Instagram account.

Most people thought it ended there. However, on January 18, a second picture was posted of the egg with a small crack in it. Over the next two weeks, pictures were posted of the egg becoming increasingly more cracked. Eventually, a video of the egg breaking was posted on February 4.

The video revealed that the whole campaign to make the egg the most liked picture on Instagram was, in fact, a campaign for mental health awareness. It showed the cracks forming around the egg until it eventually fell apart completely. The egg said that the pressures of social media got to it until it couldn’t take it anymore. It urged people to talk to someone if they too are struggling with mental health problems that may arise from social media usage.

Instagram has been criticised as recent studies have found it to be the most harmful social platform for people’s mental health. Instagram has been linked to increased depression, anxiety and feelings of missing out on exciting events which can in turn cause more mental health problems.

The video ended with an inspirational message from the creators of the page that together people can be healthier mentally. They created a website at www.talkingegg.info. It is a list of organisations in countries around the world which can help people to address their mental health issues. They want people to add more organisations to the list so people have an easy place to find help for any problems that they are having.
