The protests started in November 2018. People are upset about things being more expensive. They do not have money to buy food and pay their bills. This is because they are paid very little. The amount that they are paid is less than what they need to live.

The French government has been trying to fight global warming. One of the things that the French government has been doing is raising taxes on fuel for cars. This is causing poor people to have even less money.
