China has changed actors’ pay. They made a limit on it. The limit means actors cannot make more than 40% of the total movie cost. Lead actors cannot make more than 70% of the total casting cost.

Many people have been talking about celebrity pay in China. It has been an important topic. In May, a famous TV presenter posted on Twitter. He posted pictures of a contract. The contract was between a famous movie actress in China and a movie studio. It was worth $1.6m. The presenter said the actress signed two contracts. The presenter said many celebrities sign two contracts but only give the lower-value contract to the government. This is so they can pay less taxes. These contracts are called “yin and yang contracts”.

In June, China tax workers began studying this. This is one reason China has limited actors’ pay. They do not want celebrities avoiding taxes.

The Chinese government says they also want to stop “money worship“. They don’t like that young people worship celebrities. They think it teaches bad lessons. The government said they should protect people. They said that is more important than making lots of money from movies.
