Level 2

The UK is thinking about banning pet shops from selling puppies. They want to care for the animals’ welfare.

In 2018, there will be new regulations for breeders. The first regulation means they will need a special license. The second, says they cannot sell kittens or puppies under 8 weeks old. The third, says breeders need to show the mother alongside the puppy when selling it.

People think pet shops will still sell puppies illegally. Inspection will be important. They need to make sure shops follow the rules.

Some puppies come from terrible and filthy places and sometimes breeders will sell puppies that are already sick. Big puppy farms do not take good care of the animals’ health. People think the UK needs to protect these animals.

The new rules will begin in October.
